Our Story

For more than 30 years, Child’s Play has sold quality toys and books, specially curated to develop children’s sense of wonder and play.

Our owner, Steven Aarons, started Child’s Play because he believes that toys are the tools children use to explore the world. Our marvelous toys and books help children discover their gifts, develop their skills and have fun.

Because play is the most important part of childhood.

Commitment to the Environment

At Child's Play, we not only care about kids, we care about preserving our planet for their future. That's why our store is powered by solar energy.

Steven Aarons, Chief Play Officer

An overgrown kid who never lost his sense of wonder, Steven Aarons dreamed of a special place where children and play are celebrated — so he opened Child’s Play in 1986.

As soon as you step in the door, you feel the magic of Child’s Play. From the toys that inspire hours of creative play to the well-loved books, Steven’s belief in the power of play imbues every corner of the store.

He has an uncanny ability to remember each child — what toys they love, how they learn and how to inspire them. You’ll often find him on the floor of the store, playing with a child (or another overgrown kid).

Steven even won an award for playing! In 2016, ASTRA (The American Specialty Toy Retailers Association) gave him a Lifetime Achievement Award for his work promoting the importance of play.

In addition to toys and books, Steven plays with art, cooking and his bike. Watch his eyes light up when he talks about his favorite book, The Neverending Story.

Through Child’s Play, Steven supports hundreds of local schools and organizations. He has served as the chair of ASTRA, was on the board of the Good Toy Group (a retail association) and advises many manufacturers on product development.

Steven lives with his wife, Simmie, in Chevy Chase, D.C., and brims with pride for his two grown children, Josh, an economic analyst, and Zoe, an oceanographer.
